After completion of the empennage in the summer of 2020, I decided I needed a way to handle large, bulky assemblies such as the wings and fuselage and so decided to install a track system for a chain hoist on a trolley to move these items from the build tables to a fixture for storage and eventual transport to the hangar. The track system consists of a steel plate† hung from the roof rafters in the garage and I proof-loaded this system to 400 lbs, initially.

I got delivery of the rest of the airframe kit to the hangar in the fall and so now I was finally able to restart the effort on the aircraft build.

October 11, 2020

The empennage fairing is shipped with the RV-14A finish kit that arrived in September and with that part available, was able install the last item on the tail cone. The bolted-on fairing provides an aerodynamic closeout to the horizontal and vertical stabs and provides access to the Vanís defined location for the ACK ELT.

The main wing box internal structure is shown on the left and is a typical rib and spar construction. The main spar is pre-assembled and anodized by the factory and requires just minimum final match hole sizing to the ribs. The flap brackets and one of the aileron brackets can be seen protruding from the rear spar.

December 9, 2020

The outboard leading edge assembly for the left wing is shown in the photos below and is typical skin and rib construction. The skins come from the factory, pre-cut with holes for a landing light so decided to go ahead and make use of those to hold the Sunspot LED lights.

The left fuel tank construction is complete. The right tank is finished on Feb 12, 2021. Both fuel tanks were leak tested with 3 gallons of 100LL with the tank is varying orientations, on March 8, 2021. No leaks detected.

February 20, 2021

The Outboard Leading Edge and Tank assemblies were installed on both wings. Internal wiring was begun on both wings.

March 20, 2021

The aileron and flap gap assemblies have been riveted to the wing box and flaps for both wings were completed and installed with temporary hardware.

April 4, 2021

The aileron assemblies are complete and installed on the wing boxes

April 12, 2021

Wing systems installation is complete and wings are ready for the bottom skins.

April 12, 2021

Bottom skin installation to the wing boxes completes the wing structure.

May 2, 2021

Wing tip alignment and match drilling with the wing skins completes the wing assemblies after 7 months of effort.
